2019 was my 15th anniversary for photography. Here's to another 15 more!! In late 2019, I upgraded my Canon Powershot SX40 to the SX70, and took it for it's first shoot in the 012520 Kadunce River series. I wasn't super happy with the inconsistent quality of images coming from my copy of my SX70 (I'm not saying it's a bad camera!), so I changed to an SX60 for the 092420 Centennial Park series, and, unhappy with the quality of the images from my specific copy of the SX60 (and the video quality wasn't that good either, for some reason), I changed yet again to a Panasonic Lumix FZ300 for the 100820 Centennial Park series. Having the settings dialed in the way I wanted, and producing great pictures, but unhappy with the shorter zoom range (compared to my Canon's), I changed cameras again to a Canon SX50 for the 122120 Centennial Park series. With my SX50, for the first time, I got used to working with RAW files, and was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of photos that can be created from them!
2020 in general was a difficult year for me, and not just because of the dangers of COVID-19. I had three different jobs, I used four different cameras, and not being able to visit the United States in the autumn (or early winter, or anytime in 2021) was an adjustment. Luckily, and thankfully, I didn't lose anyone directly related to me from COVID-19, and hopefully that will continue.
In late 2020, I got a new job at Primary Foto Source, and shortly after, got a new camera...the fantastic Nikon P950. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the great photos that my SX50 put out, but the opportunity to get something newer (and in my opinion, better...and of course, staff discount), was too great to pass up. Even though the P950 has the same sized sensor as all my Canon superzooms, the pictures that it takes (especially the raws), are way, way better, with so much more detail. It honestly blew my mind! The first shoots taken with my P950...010321 Grey Squirrels and even better 020121 Centennial Park, turned out fantastic! Aside from some extrememly minor usability disadvantages over my Canon's, I'm excited whenever I get to go out for a shoot with this camera.
In April 2022, the US border opened up again (without requiring any expensive tests to come back into Canada), allowing me to go back to my favorite places along the North Shore to photograph. I'm still enjoying my Nikon P950, and I'm still amazed by the great images it can create! So far, it's been a great experience, being able to go to the places I know well, but with a camera that takes better quality pictures, and being able to therefore capture images of these places that are sharper and more detailed.
